About the exhibition

Three of the artists in AT HOME are new to the gallery. Hilary Arnold-Baker was trained by Sir Roger de Grey, former President of the Royal Academy, in unchanged Renaissance techniques such as gessoing and gilding to ‘create the heirlooms of the future’. Rhoda K Baker gained a MA from the Royal College of Art in knitting and weaving, and now makes laboriously difficult 3D paper structures. Jyl Millard’s new work in miniature scale fuses her skills of jewellery making, photographic techniques, installation art and psychotherapy in examining the psychodynamics within the family home. Many of you will remember (and are still wearing) Jenny Turtill’s carved cuttlefish silver jewellery with unusual semi-precious stones from a mixed show in 2004. She also exhibited some of her larger bronze pieces in one of the early garden shows. We have also previously exhibited Tina Vlassopulos’s hand built pots with gravity defying twists at the London Art Fair at the British Design Centre in the 1990s.

If you wish to have the opportunity of meeting any particular artist, please contact the gallery for information on when they will be in attendance.

HILARY ARNOLD-BAKER - GILDED AND COLLAGED PAPIER-MACHE BOWLS, GESSOED AND GILDED WOODEN BOXES Painter, designer, gilder, sculptor and furniture maker, Hilary combines the meticulous techniques of Renaissance Italy with a decidedly modern approach to design, as exemplified in this show by her smaller pieces

RHODA K BAKER - PAPERSCAPES: LOW RELIEF 3D PAPER & BOARD WALLPIECES Rhoda’s background in textile design & weaving is evident in her low relief, geometric structures created using mostly manual cutting techniques

JYL MILLARD - A PSYCHOCARTOGRAPHICAL INSTALLATION INCLUDING JEWELLERY, TABLEAUX & PRINTS Musician, video maker, photographer and installation artist, Jyl’s new work in 1/12th scale examines the psychodynamics within the home environment

JENNY TURTILL - TEXTURED GOLD & SILVER JEWELLERY SET WITH SEMI-PRECIOUS STONES & BEADS The distinctive element of Jenny’s work is the casting of the silver and gold elements from carved cuttlefish bone. The carvings create intricate textures, which vary from piece to piece

TINA VLASSOPULOS - ONE-OFF CERAMIC SCULPTURAL POTS & SLIPCAST TABLEWARE Tina’s hand-built burnished pots with their gravity defying spirals are instantly recognisable. She is also exhibiting her functional tableware with sculptural twists
